The very best in African American art
June 29, 2004 -- You are invited to the grand opening of a unique website. Very user friendly. Several exquisite and unique artistic pieces designed from combinations of African fabric patterns and colorful paints. http://www.artbyjane.com website is the culmination of many years of hard work to develop and communciate with those who view Jane Johnson's art. Jane has had a love of art all her life. She paints small or large scenes using acrylic, watercolor, pen and pencil mixed with beautiful African prints.
Disabling severe arthritis made it no longer possible for Jane to work in her chosen profession. Jane is basically a self taught artist. after taking art classes at the local community college. Jane applied to and was accepted into prestigious Otis College of Art and Design.
In 1989 Designs by Jane was established. Jane's work has been exhibited in galleries, universities, community colleges, municipalities, fine art shows and festivals. Awards include first, second, third, best of show places and cash prizes.
All drawings and paintings emanate from aspects of her life reflecting her bachelor of art in sociology and masters of science in psychology as well as her personal feelings about women, children, African American and societal issues at large.
She draws and paints about courage and the unshakable tenacious human spirit. A spirit that forces one to continue when it might be easier to give up.
Such courage is illustrated in her painting of a homeless pregnant women, who chose to stand near the freeway and wash car windows for donations rather than give up on life. She draws and paints about sweetness, the sweetness of children in various everyday situations such as learning to skate, ride, kiss, etc. with grandfather or grandmother's loving help.
Many of her paintings also demonstrate the joy of life as expressed by her colorful African Dancers. The fun of observing political
exchanges and just plain gossip is noted in her fixin' hair beauty shop painting.
Designed by Jane Johnson who arose from bedridden, debilitating, severe arthritis to successful artist.
