SCIENTIST DISCOVERS BAFFLING LETTER PATTERNS IN ANCIENT TEXT

"If I were a SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) analyst and saw something like this on my computer screen, I'd say that we had been contacted," said Ed Sherman, a veteran mathematician.

Sherman was referring to his discovery of extremely unusual letter patterns involving familiar Bible names such as Adam, Eve, Noah and Moses in the ancient Hebrew text of the Torah, or first five books of the Bible.

When he searched by computer beneath the surface wording of the Bible, the names showed up either far more or far less than expected.

Sherman's research was introduced in the December issue of Bible Code Digest (www.biblecodedigest.com).

"These discoveries raise serious doubts that any human could have composed the first 17 chapters of Genesis," said Sherman.

"Even with the aid of 10 linked super-computers," he continued. "I believe that it would be impossible for even a gifted author like John Grisham to write a coherent book with the kinds of sub-surface patterns we are seeing in Genesis."

Many biblical scholars believe that Genesis was written by Moses with "divine inspiration" some 3,500 years ago. According to Jewish tradition, Moses received the Torah from God "letter by letter."

With more than 27 years of experience, Sherman consults on insurance risk for Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, and is frequently an expert witness in court cases involving statistical interpretations of evidence.

Employing statistical analysis like space-age cryptanalysts use to decipher codes, he found that many short Hebrew words in the book of Genesis appear in ways that radically depart from clear expectations. Sherman has termed such patterns of systematic differences "mosaics."

"Basic math tells us how often these words should show up with equal spacing between their letters. Mosaics exist when potentially encrypted words appear far more or far less than chance would dictate," he said.

In some cases, these mosaics appear to be the direct result of dramatic fluctuations in letter frequencies between different chapters in Genesis 1-17. The size of such fluctuations far exceeds those of other control texts, such as a Hebrew translation of War and Peace, or an English version of Moby Dick.

Even after throwing out the chapters with unusual characteristics, such as those with genealogies, the size of the letter frequency fluctuations between the remaining chapters was still extremely high.

The Genesis text is, according to Sherman, extraordinarily complex, going beyond what could be explained by the combined effects of the possibilities of stylistic differences between distinct authors, shifts in subject matter and chance variations.

"The only explanation I can come up with for these striking aberrations is that an intelligence far exceeding that of any human being intentionally embedded these mosaics in the text," said Sherman.

In addition to the names of well-known Biblical characters, he also researched the Hebrew word "echad," for the oneness of God, which is very significant to the Jewish faith. "The echad mosaic is particularly striking, going much farther beyond the boundaries of rational explanation than any of the other mosaics."

Sherman's computations for many mosaics produced odds so unlikely that a well-known spreadsheet software program could not calculate them. This was also true for the chance occurrence of the dramatic fluctuations in letter frequencies that he analyzed.

According to Sherman, the software could not handle computations when the odds of something were less than 1 in
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,

He pointed out that scientific writers have commented that the largest meaningful number that can be related to anything is about 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

The mosaic discoveries are very significant to Bible code researchers, because they are much more difficult for skeptics to refute than traditional Bible codes.

Skeptics argue that because of "wiggle room" due to differences between interpretations of ancient versus modern Hebrew and other issues, traditional Bible codes are invalid.

Mosaics, on the other hand, are straightforward, algebraic analyses of abnormalities in the accepted Hebrew text.

"We will no doubt be asked whether similar abnormalities occur in the Koran and other religious books, but we have not had time to analyze those," said Sherman.
